Community Matters: A Whole Lott More
Community Matters is dedicated to generating discussion and activism around topics that affect us locally, including health, environment, education, housing, and energy.
People with developmental disabilities who work often find manufacturing jobs in “workplaces,” coalitions of businesses and social service agencies. For decades, one such employer, Lott Industries in Toledo, Ohio, had 1200 workers with disabili- ties, but with the collapse of the Detroit auto industry Lott has struggled to keep its doors open. Focusing on three resilient workers, each with a different disability and a different attitude, this is an incredibly nuanced, thoughtful view of the financial crisis as seen through Lott’s struggles—and an examination of the wider world of employment options for people with disabilities. Ultimately, it makes a powerful case for greater employment opportunities for all.
Q&A Lisa Tarricone, Director of Systems Advocacy for Westchester Independent Living Center (WILC); co-chair of the Westchester Disability Advocacy Partnership and Richard Swierat, Executive Director of The ARC of Westchester.
Join us for a reception with local, sustainable food from Table Local Market.
Community Matters is sponsored by the Westchester Community Foundation.
